Art Classes with Simon Broom
My mission is to remove the block between your vision and what you are actually producing. Being able to understand and correct your errors enables you to produce work you are truly happy with and really reflects your creative goals.
In most art classes you are one of twelve or more students. I teach one to one, or two to one if you'd like to learn with a friend. Therefore I am able to give each student personal attention.
What you get:
An honest starting point. I assess your work at the start, so we know exactly what to focus on first.
Mistakes caught early. I spot problems as they happen, before they turn into habits.
Practice between sessions. For those who wish to practice, I provide tailor-made exercises to do at home, so you keep improving between lessons.
Traditional techniques. I teach the methods of the old masters, giving people a solid grounding, allowing you to expand into your own style.
Your own pace. I teach adults of all ages and also A level students building their skills.
Pay as you go. There's no 12-week course to pay for upfront. You book and pay for each lesson as you go, so you have time to try out what you've learned and come back when you're ready.
For years I struggled to make progress with my art. Then I went to a traditional atelier, where a young woman half my age, trained in the techniques of the old masters, handed me a stick of charcoal and asked me to draw a simple shape in front of me.
She spotted every mistake I was making straight away. From then on, my drawing and painting improved faster than I'd ever thought possible.
I want to save you the frustrations I went through and help you progress as quickly as possible.
Every drawing or painting is trying to say something. When you're starting out, it's frustrating to have a clear vision in your head and watch it fail to come through on the paper or canvas.
Whether your work lands with the viewer depends on how fluent you are in the language of art: form, proportion, tone and colour. These skills can be learned, and with the right guidance, they come much faster than you might expect.
Lessons in my home studio, South West London
All lessons take place in person in my home studio in South West London. It's a calm, focused space with everything set up for you, so you can just turn up and paint or draw.
Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time in years or getting ready for your A levels, I'd love to hear what you're hoping to achieve.
